Sister Henrietta Schwagler, longtime teacher in Catholic schools

STELLA NIAGARA – Sister Henrietta Schwagler, a teacher for many years in Catholic elementary and high schools, died Monday in Sisters of St. Francis Health Center, where she had lived since 2008. She was 97.

Born in Buffalo, she entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity at Stella Niagara in 1936 and, as Sister Mary Clement, professed her vows on Aug. 17, 1938.

She graduated from Stella Niagara Normal School in 1941 and received a bachelor’s degree in eduction in 1947 and a master’s degree in education in 1959 from Mount St. Joseph Teacher’s College, now Medialle College.

She taught in St. Lawrence School, St. Benedict School and Bishop McMahon High School in Buffalo and in elementary and high schools in Columbus, Ohio.

She also served as receptionist, director of admissions and director of health care personnel at St. Luke Convalescent Center in Columbus and in the medical library at St. Ann Hospital in Westerville, Ohio.

She retired in 1998.

Survivors include several cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. Friday in the Sisters Chapel at Stella Niagara Convent, 4421 Lower River Road.
