MITCHELL, Richard "Dick"

Mitchell - Richard "Dick" Age 80, of Sarasota, FL, a retired (1997) professor from SUNY at Buffalo, died March 16, 2016 at Tidewell Hospice. Born in Michigan, he graduated from Muskegon Heights High School in 1953 and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. He graduated from Western Michigan University in 1960 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1964. He taught quantitative methods at Arizona State University before joining the Geography Department at SUNY/Buffalo in 1966. He served as Department Chairman and director of graduate studies. Besides teaching quantitative methods and geographic statistics, he developed his own unique course, "Geography of Buffalo." He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Betty (Petrick), daughters Sandra Kelly (Kim), Lisa Russell (Mark), son Brian (Amy), seven grandchildren, and brother Stephen Robert Mitchell. He was an avid golfer; collector of Buffalo and Larkin Soap Company memorabilia; competitive bridge player; enjoyed playing euchre and CAD with children and grandchildren; and happiest at the craps table wherever there was a casino. A Celebration of Life will be held at WIEGAND BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME on April 2 in Sarasota and inurnment will be at Sarasota National Cemetery.
