The Erie County Sheriff’s Office has charged two people with trying to smuggle Suboxone into the Erie County Holding Center through the mail.
Some Suboxone strips were discovered by a civilian jail employee in a letter addressed to an inmate, triggering an investigation, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.
Authorities said Rebecca Smith and Gerald Kwasniewski, both of Buffalo, were the “lead individuals” in a drug-smuggling ring. They were charged with a felony count of introducing dangerous contraband into a prison and misdemeanor conspiracy.
Kwasniewski, 35, an inmate at the holding center, was already in custody for charges from Buffalo, Hamburg and Lackawanna.
Smith, 43, was arrested in the holding center’s visitor waiting area. She was being held at the holding center pending her arraignment in Buffalo City Court.
