John C. Carbonara, philosophy professor at Buffalo State

John Charles Carbonara of Buffalo, a professor emeritus at SUNY Buffalo State, died unexpectedly Saturday in Sisters Hospital. He was 80.

Born in Lockport, he was a graduate of DeSales High School in Lockport and earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees and his doctorate in philosophy from the University of Buffalo. He served in the Navy from 1954 to 1957 as an electrician aboard the USS Newport News and USS Salem.

Mr. Carbonara joined the faculty at Buffalo State in 1964. A professor of philosophy, he received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for excellence in teaching in 1974 and served in the College Senate. He retired in 2008 and was chairman of the Emeriti Association at Buffalo State for the past eight years.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, the former Karen Lundberg; two sisters, Patricia Baker and Francesca Brown; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday in Amigone Funeral Home, 1132 Delaware Ave.
