SolarCity co-founder Peter Rive to speak at UB

Peter Rive, the co-founder of SolarCity and the rooftop solar systems installer’s chief technology officer, will be the first speaker in a University at Buffalo lecture series on energy, environment and water sustainability.

Rive will speak at 10 a.m. Wednesday in 101 Davis Hall on UB’s North Campus. The event is free, but advance registration is required at

Rive, who co-founded the company with his brother, Lyndon, SolarCity’s CEO, is expected to discuss the firm’s business, technologies, manufacturing plans and outlook for solar energy.

The state, through Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo’s Buffalo Billion economic development initiative, is building a $900 million solar panel factory for SolarCity that will be the biggest in the Western Hemisphere when it opens next year. The factory will have the annual capacity to build enough solar panels to generate 1 gigawatt of electricity.
