Joseph E. Schimenti of Amherst, the retired owner of a family-owned produce wholesale business, died Tuesday in Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital, Amherst. He was 82.
Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Schimenti was 17 when he moved to Buffalo with his family in 1950. He attended Lafayette High School. Mr. Schimenti later served in the Army’s 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division, at Fort Bragg, N.C., from 1953-55.
He was the owner and president of Sunset Fruit & Vegetable, at the Clinton Bailey Farmers Market, from 1961 until his retirement in 1989.
He also was a member of the Tan Tara Golf Club.
His wife of 51 years, the former Shirley A. Carrigan, died in 2006.
Survivors include a son, Michael; one daughter, Teresa Larson; a brother, John; two sisters, Rachel Procopio and RoseAnn Kish; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Christopher Catholic Church, 2600 Niagara Falls Blvd., Town of Tonawanda.
