UB women dominate the glass in key conference win; Bona falls

Big buckets late helped the University at Buffalo secure a 55-52 win over Bowling Green in Mid-American Conference women’s basketball action in Alumni Arena on Wednesday.

Joanna Smith made a jumper with 1:08 left in the game to give the Bulls a 54-52 lead. Stephanie Reid hit one of two free throws with four seconds left and Cassie Oursler blocked a three-point attempt at the buzzer to secure the win. Reid finished with 14 points and Smith with 10 as the Bulls improved to 14-12, 6-9 in the MAC.

Buffalo dominated the glass, holding a 43-27 rebounding lead and limiting Bowling Green to just two offensive rebounds. The play on the boards resulted in 19 second-chance points for the Bulls, who also added 18 points in the paint.

The win put the Bulls ahead of Bowling Green in the conference standings as the Falcons fell to 5-10 in conference play, 9-15 overall. The Bulls play at Ohio on Saturday.

Meanwhile, St. Bonaventure’s women suffered a 77-68 loss to Fordham at Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx in Atlantic 10 action.

The Bonnies fell to 22-6 overall and 11-4 in Atlantic 10 play. It also drops them to 7-6 on the road, 4-4 in conference contests.

The Bonnies had started hot, using a 12-0 run to take a 16-10 lead in the first quarter. They led by as many as 14, 38-24, at 7:15 of the second quarter. But then the Bonnies went cold and Fordham’s offense heated up. The Rams closed first half on a 7-0 run to close Bona’s lead to 41-26 at the break.

Fordham then used another 7-0 run to take a 49-47 lead with 1:15 left in the third. The Rams (13-15 overall, 8-7 A-10) never trailed after that.

Fordham shot 47.2 percent from the field and went 17 of 18 from the free throw line.

Mariah Ruff led Bona with 21 points while Katie Healy added 14 with 11 rebounds.

Bona closes the regular season at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Reilly Center when its hosts host conference leader Duquesne.
