The “bank shame campaign” led by Assemblyman Michael Kearns is receiving statewide support.
A statewide group, New Yorkers for Responsible Lending, has endorsed the campaign, which spotlights the problem of vacant homes in Western New York with incomplete foreclosures. Kearns and the Western New York Law Center have called for banks to complete the foreclosure process so the homes can be put back on the market.
NYRL describes itself as a coalition of 165 groups that “promotes access to fair and affordable financial services and the preservation of assets for all New Yorkers and their communities.” The member groups including fair lending groups, labor groups, community development financial institutions, and community reinvestment groups.
In a letter of endorsement, NYRL said it wanted to help Kearns “bring to light the issue of vacant and abandoned properties that exist across New York state due to bank inaction.”
