It has been 25 years since three men from East Orange, N.J., got together to form the hip-hop group Naughty By Nature, who went on to put out iconic releases in the early 1990s. Comprised of DJ Kay Gee, Treach and Vinnie, the group is reuniting for a 25th anniversary tour that includes a show Feb. 24 in the Waiting Room (334 Delaware Ave.).
The trio of musicians graduated from the same high school and originally started their music career as the New Style in the late ’80s. After Queen Latifah discovered their debut LP “Independent Leaders,” she mentored and rebranded the group as Naughty by Nature with a self-titled debut in 1991 through Tommy Boy Records.
On that album was the single “O.P.P.” which became one of the most prolific tracks in the early age of hip-hop. In 1993 they released their next album “19 Naughty III” which housed the party pleasing “Hip Hop Hooray.” Although the members of Naughty by Nature went through a rough patch and broke up late in 2000, they are joining forces once again for this tour and also for a new EP projected to be released this year.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the stage will be warmed up by local talent Short Moscato, Lucky Seven and Truey V. Tickets are $20 in advance (waitingroombuffalo.com, 893-2900 or at After Dark’s box office, 630 Elmwood Ave.); $25 at the door. Naughty by Nature is an all-ages show; under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
