Monday marks the fifth anniversary of Terry and Kim Pegula purchasing the Sabres, removing doubt about their future in Buffalo. They paid $1.4 billion for the Bills after Ralph Wilson died. They helped breathe life into downtown with HarborCenter.
The couple has given more than their share during their time in Buffalo. They deserve credit for resisting pressure to build a new downtown stadium. Let’s remember that they’re not the communal ATM. Gov. Andrew Cuomo also isn’t in a hurry for new digs built just to serve the NFL.
Taxpayers recently pumped $130 million into The Ralph. The Bills will need a new stadium someday, but not someday soon. Rather than get bullied by NFL owners who want them to generate more revenue, they’re doing right by fans.
A new stadium would be nice, but Buffalo isn’t a city that needs the best and latest. The Ralph works. Fans enjoyit. It’s a charming old building with great sightlines and enough amenities. A new stadium means higher ticket prices. I’d rather see a full old stadium than an empty new one.
You know what Buffalo fans really need? Playoff teams.
