Buffalo's Best: Who are Western New York's greatest athletes of all-time?

Western New York has produced a litany of great athletes. So many that when it comes to determining an all-time Top 10 a good many "greats" end up on the outside looking in.

So who are the very best?

We're going to try to answer that question.

Our "Buffalo's Best" series will take a look at the top male and female athletes from our region in a series starting Feb. 18. We will unveil our top 10 as determined by a vote of The Buffalo News sports department staff (see those links below).

We'll begin with stories on the No. 10 male and female athletes and in subsequent days we'll publish stories as we get closer to the top. We'll conclude the series by revealing the No. 1 female athlete, followed the next day by the No. 1 male athlete.

Who do you think deserves a Top 10 spot? Here's your chance to make your picks -- vote in the polls below.

What about athletes who you think should have been on the ballot but weren't? Who is your No. 1 overall? What sport should have been represented? Let us know in the comments section, by tweeting at @TBNSports or emailing
