The man accused of gunning down a longtime resident of the Towne Gardens apartment complex last month was arraigned Friday morning in State Supreme Court.
Demario J. Washington, 39, pleaded not guilty to the charge that he murdered Elroy Damidaux, 55, on Jan. 29.
Investigators have not released a motive for why anyone would shoot Damidaux, described by neighbors as a retiree who lived on disability payments.
A person who lived nearby told police after the shooting that he had seen Washington outside Damidaux’s apartment earlier that evening and Washington told him, “Get out of here or you might get hurt.”
Washington was on parole after having served a year and a half in prison for an assault conviction and remains in custody.
