St. Bonaventure’s men had another good day at the Atlantic 10 swimming and diving championship in Geneva, Ohio.
Michael Pilyugin broke the conference record in the 50-yard free during preliminaries with a time of 19.84 seconds. Though he posted a 19.5 in the final, that time was still the winning time in the event.
Michael White placed second in the 200 IM for the Bonnies, while Pilyugin, White, Matt Taccard and Logan Hellwig took second in the 200 free relay.
Bona has 187 points after two days of competition. Massachusetts leads with 268 followed by La Salle with 177.5.
At the State University of New York Athletic Conference meet at Erie Community College’s Flickinger Center, sophomore Connor Mergler (Williamsville North) set a conference record and defended his conference title in the 50 free during the first day of competition. The SUNY Buffalo State swimmer posted a winning time of 20.38 seconds, which broke his own school mark by more than a half second. Mergler’s time also is an NCAA B-cut time and tied for fourth best among Division III swimmers in the nation.
Mergler, fellow North alum Kyle Siskar, Matthew Ringer and Ryan McHale (Lancaster) placed third in the 200 free relay in a Bengals record time of 1:25.31.
The Buffalo State men stand sixth out of nine teams, while the women stand eighth.
The 400 medley relay team, which includes Frontier graduate Alison Kolczynski, took fourth.
The competition resumes at 10 a.m. Friday at ECC with preliminary heats. The finals start at 5:30 p.m.
