Jack Eichel and Rasmus Ristolainen will find out soon if they’re locks for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
The eight teams competing in the tournament will announce their initial rosters of 16 players March 2. The remaining players will be selected prior to the World Cup, which will be held Sept. 17 through Oct. 1 in Toronto.
Eichel and Ristolainen are the Sabres with the best chances of being picked. Eichel is eligible to play for Team North America, which will consist of Americans and Canadians ages 23 and younger. Ristolainen can play for Team Finland.
Ristolainen will learn his status first. Finland will hold a morning news conference at 4 a.m. Eastern time. The selections for Team North America will be made at 5:15 p.m. live on Canadian television. Team USA will announce its players at 6:45 p.m. on ESPN.
The remaining teams are Russia, Czech Republic, Sweden, Canada and Europe, which is for players outside of Russia, Finland, Sweden and Czech Republic. Former Sabres forward Miroslav Satan is the general manager of the European team.
