Death of baby girl found in water ruled an accident

The death of a one-year-old baby girl found by Buffalo police in a pool of water in a home in the city’s Riverside area early Tuesday afternoon has been ruled an accident, authorities said.

Erie County medical examiners ruled the death a drowning after an autopsy conducted Wednesday morning, Buffalo Police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge said.

Police rushed to a home in the first block of Peoria Street home about 2 p.m. after a 911 call reported a baby not breathing. Officers found the baby somewhat responsive and she was rushed to Women & Children’s Hospital where she later died.

Officers found the one-year-old in water in the bathroom area, DeGeorge said. Family members were home at the time of the incident, he said.

Erie County Child Protective Services also is investigating the death.
