Love is in the air, and soon to be in the ovens of Just Pizza locations around Western New York.
While some people give chocolate hearts, we cannot see why adding a heart-shaped pizza shouldn't be in the mix.
For 20 years, Just Pizza has been making special heart-shaped pizzas for Valentine’s Day. This year, Valentine’s falls on a Sunday. The pizzeria will be busy selling its iconic pies to folks who want to eat their hearts out. But only on Valentine’s Day.
“We keep it true to the date. We want it to remain the popular novelty that it has become for us,” said Mark D. Campanella Sr., vice president of Marketing and Franchise Development of Just Pizza.
Pizzas are formed using a heart-shaped mold. The pizzeria has more than 75 varieties of pizza to choose from, along with different types of dough. It can be tough narrowing it down to just the right kind of pie to melt your lover's heart.
Campanella said the tradition started in 1996 at the original location at the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Bidwell Parkway (it later relocated to 300 Elmwood Ave.).
"The number of pizzas we serve varies, but it can range from 45 to a 100 or better, depending on the location,” said Campanella.
The best way to ensure you get a heart-shaped pizza is to pre-order, he said. The base price is the same as a large pizza.
The pizza comes in its own special box, too.
When asked if the pizza serves two, Campanella replied, “We leave that pretty much up to the individual who purchases it. The pizza can feed up to four. But keep in mind the heart-shaped pizza is served uncut, because at Just Pizza, we don’t want to break any hearts.”
