50 years ago: Springville's Jack Yellen remembers 'Last of the Red Hot Mamas'

Fifty years ago today, the great vaudevillian performer Sophie Tucker died in New York City.

On the occasion, The News sought out a comment from Tucker's longtime collaborator  and Springville resident Jack Yellen, the Polish-born lyricist, screenwriter and onetime Buffalo Courier reporter responsible for "Happy Days Are Here Again" and other classics:


Tucker's legend remains popular among musical theater fans. Locally, she was last seen in a popular one-woman show performed by Kelli Bocock-Natale in the Irish Classical Theatre Company in 2007.
