KUSTAS, Dr. George

Kustas - Dr. George Age 93, retired emeritus Professor of Classics and Rhetoric at the University of Buffalo, died Sunday, February 7th, 2016, at Trinity House in Beechwood Care Home, Amherst. He was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, the son of Louis G. and Argiro (Kavour) Kustas, on November 21, 1922. Kustas earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree in Classics from Cornell University, and a Ph.D. in Greek Classics from Harvard University. He served as Chair of the Department of Classics at the University of Buffalo, and was a member of both the Faculty Senate and University Senate. He taught at the University of Buffalo from 1954 until his retirement in 1985. He proudly served in the US Army in World War II. He is survived by his son, Andrew L. Kustas; his grandson, Jordan, and his sister, Maria Mavodones and brother-in-law, Zinas Mavodones of Poughkeepsie. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, Kingston, NY, on Friday, February 12 at 11 AM. Interment with military honors will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Goetz Library of the Classics Department at the University of Buffalo.
