The Thruway Authority announced Tuesday an updated discount rate of 35 percent for Canadian currency at all Thruway plazas beginning Saturday. Officials explained that with the Canadian dollar now valued at 35 percent less than the U.S. dollar, a toll of $1 U.S. will be $1.54 Canadian.
The authority said the new values will allow for a fair exchange rate in areas near the Canadian border.
Officials also said a toll of less than $1 paid in Canadian currency will be accepted without discount and any necessary change will be returned in Canadian, if available. If one dollar or more of Canadian currency is tendered, it will be discounted at the current rate of the whole dollar amount (35 percent).
