Nearly hitting cop car, driving without headlights get two arrested for DWI

City of Tonawanda police arrested two people for drunk driving Saturday after one crossed a center line and nearly hit a police car and the other was found driving without headlights in the middle of the night.

Police arrested Richard J. Austin, 29, of Sunset Terrace in Tonawanda, around midnight after he crossed the center line on Young Street, almost sideswiping a police car heading in the other direction. Officers turned around and stopped him on Ellicott Creek Road.

Austin told officers he had “only three beers” and was “headed to Williamsville,” police reported.

He refused a breath test, and was charged with DWI, reckless driving, making an unsafe lane change, having no inspection sticker and crossing the center lines. He was held on $250 bail.

About two hours later, at 2:20 a.m., Jennifer J. West, 46, of Greiner Road in Clarence was stopped on Delaware Street with no headlights on. She showed signs of being drunk, told officers she “was drinking wine all night,” and was found to have a 0.20 blood-alcohol content. She was charged with DWI, aggravated DWI and driving with no headlights, and held for $250 bail.
