After qualifying in 19th place, Brad Angelo of Lockport went 6-2 in match play Thursday night to move into sixth place in the 51st FireLake PBA Tournament of Champions in Shawnee, Okla.
Angelo shot 1,762 in the final round of qualifying to reach Thursday night’s first set of matches. His overall total of 7,292 is eight pins out of the fifth spot in the standings. After two more rounds of matches, the top five will qualify for Sunday’s television finals (ESPN, 2 p.m.).
Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga shot 1,687 Thursday morning and failed to make the 24-bowler cut. She was 25th.
Sweden’s Jesper Svensson struck on 22 of his first 23 shots leading off the cashers round Thursday morning to advance from sixth place to first. He held he lead despite going 5-3 in match play Thursday night. The 20-year-old left-handed two-hander from Sweden started with games of 289 and 300 on Thursday.
