Lackawanna man tried to stab police officers with kitchen knife upon arrest

A 30-year-old Lackawanna man was physically restrained by a number of Buffalo police officers after he allegedly tried to stab several of them with a kitchen knife as he was arrested late Monday.

Kevin Helmbrecht was arrested at his Ridge Road home about 11 p.m. on the complaint of a Downing Street men who told police the suspect beat the man with a lawn edger implement after the man refused his request for money so he could buy drugs. The Downing Street man suffered an eye injury and broken legs, according to a police report.

As Helmbrecht was being taken into custody on a felony charge of second-degree assault for the Downing Street incident he allegedly became combative and attacked officers, grabbing a kitchen knife and trying to stab several of them. He was also charged with a felony count of menacing a police officer, resisting arrest, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, obstructing governmental administration, second-degree harassment and petit larceny.
