Massive sheet of granite pins and injures worker in Wheatfield industrial mishap

WHEATFIELD – A 24-year-old Ohio man was knocked unconscious and pinned by a 1,200-pound sheet of granite in an industrial accident Monday morning, before being freed by emergency workers and taken by Mercy Flight to Erie County Medical Center.

The injured man, who works for United Stones International in Oakwood Village, Ohio, was treated for back and leg injuries, but Niagara County sheriff’s officials provided no name or condition update Monday afternoon.

The mishap occurred shortly before 9:40 a.m. while the man was unloading a sheet of granite that broke free from a mount. He managed to jump partly out of the way before being knocked unconscious and pinned, sheriff’s officials reported. The accident occurred at The Granite Shop on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Wheatfield.

Bergholz Fire Co. and Tri-Community Ambulance workers responded, freed the man and took him to the old Bell Aerospace parking lot, where Mercy Flight picked him up for transport to ECMC.
