A 39-year-old Buffalo man who was free on parole was charged with fatally shooting a 55-year-old man Friday night at the Towne Gardens apartment complex, police said Monday.
Demario Washington has been charged with killing Elroy Damidaux, according to police spokesman Michael J. DeGeorge. The incident happened on the first block of Curry Walk off Jefferson Avenue.
Northeast District officers and Strike Force officers located Washington late Sunday night and placed him under arrest, DeGeorge said. Homicide detectives later charged him with second-degree murder.
A motive for the slaying remains under investigation.
Washington was arraigned in Buffalo City Court Monday and was detained at the Erie County Holding Center. Formerly of Monroe County, Washington was released on parole about two years ago, after serving time for a second-degree assault conviction.
A resident at Towne Gardens had told The Buffalo News that the gunman approached him outside the victim’s apartment on Friday night and told him to leave the area.
“This guy comes up to me and says, ‘I’m crazy ... get out of here or you might get hurt,’ ” the resident said, adding that the man showed him a gun hidden under his coat.
The resident said he went to his apartment and then heard a gunshot.
Damidaux was described as retired and a long-time resident of Towne Gardens. He was declared dead at the scene.
