Suspects enroute to scrapyard with transformer in cart draw police attention

NIAGARA FALLS – Police became suspicious about 9:30 a.m. Friday after spotting two men pushing an unwieldy object in a cart, backing up traffic while walking down the middle of Fairfield Avenue, officers said.

The object, which weighed more than 300 pounds, was a commercial transformer traced to an industrial site, and the two were enroute to a scrapyard in an attempt to make a sale, police said..

The transformer, stolen from a fenced-in yard, contained about $200 worth of copper, police added.

Thomas M. Flatt, 55, of Independence Avenue, and Chadwick K. Estes, 50, of Ontario Avenue, were both charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and third-degree criminal trespass.
