BENDER, Eugenia "Jean"
BENDER - Eugenia "Jean" Passed away peacefully on January 24, 2016. She was born in Kansas City, MO, on February 26, 1919, to
DeLima Rose (Maurice) and Alvin Morris; she was the step-daughter of James Mintzas of Buffalo, NY. She spent her childhood in Amos, Quebec, where she lived with her extended family, and moved back to the US when she was 12. Jean earned a BA in Classics from D'Youville College in Buffalo, NY, and an MA in French Literature from the University at Buffalo. She went on to use her degree and childhood background to teach high school French at Iroquois Central High School from 1959 until her retirement in 1978. Eugenia and Milton Bender were married in Buffalo, NY, in 1940, moving to Elma, NY, in 1946. She moved to Saratoga Springs in 2008, living at Prestwick Chase and Woodlawn Commons. Jean is predeceased by her husband, Milton A. Bender, her sister, Mary Ellen (Mintzas) Ragsdale, her daughter-in-law Patricia Cullen Bender and her grandson Jeffrey D. Bender. In addition to her teaching, Jean was active in the Zonta Society of East Aurora, NY and a member of the Elma Methodist Church. She enjoyed good food (both cooking and consuming), classical music, crossword puzzles, books by the hundreds, traveling, and socializing with her many friends. She loved and took great pride in her extended family. Survivors include her children, David (Rita) Bender of Berwyn, PA, Timothy (Eileen Meier) Bender of Collings wood, NJ, Susan Wilkinson (Richard) of Saratoga Springs, NY and Jeffrey (Sharon) Bender of Basking Ridge, NJ; grandchildren Kristen, Megan, Gretchen, Benjamin, Jeffrey and Alisa; seven great-grandchildren; her brother-in-law, John Ragsdale; and her nieces, Phyllis (Bender) Hartrich and Georgia and Laura Jean Ragsdale. A memorial service honoring Eugenia will be held at the Elma Methodist Church, Elma, NY, May 14, 2016, and she will be interred in the Elma Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Elma Methodist Church or the Wesley Foundation of Saratoga Springs. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted by the family to the Gordon C.
