Buffalo Police are searching for a gunman who killed a resident of the Towne Gardens apartment complex off Clinton Street on Friday night.
The victim, identified by police as Elroy Damidaux, 55, was shot and killed about 8:30 p.m. Friday. Homicide detectives are investigating.
While police released no new details on the case Saturday, residents of the Towne Gardens apartments told The Buffalo News the victim was retired and collecting disability benefits. They said he had lived in his apartment on Curry Walk in the complex for years.
One resident of the apartment complex told a reporter that Damidaux had an encounter with the gunman just outside the victim’s apartment Friday night.
“There were a few people out there. This guy comes up to me and says, ‘I’m crazy … get out of here or you might get hurt,’” the resident told The News. “He showed me he had a gun tucked up under his coat. I backed away and went right to my apartment. As I got inside my apartment, I heard a gunshot.”
The resident, who spoke on the condition that his name would not be published, said he did not know much about the victim but said he appeared to be a “very nice man … who didn’t bother anyone.”
Residents said it was their understanding the shooting took place inside the victim’s apartment, which is a short distance from the Friendship Baptist Church on Clinton Street.
Damidaux was declared dead at the scene, police said.
Police were asking that anyone with information about the slaying call the Buffalo Police TIP line at 847-2255.
Curry Walk was the scene of another shooting last May 2, when a man was critically wounded, police said.
