A late comeback fell a goal short as Canisius dropped a 3-2 decision to the Air Force Academy in HarborCenter on Friday night.
Ralph Cuddemi scored with the Golden Griffins’ goalie pulled with 20 seconds left in the third period to cut the Falcons’ lead to a goal. It was his 16th goal of the season. But Canisius could not come up with a tying goal in the closing seconds, and Air Force stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1).
Felix Chamberland had the first goal for Canisius, his third of the season, and it came in the second period after Air Force had taken a 2-1 lead.
Evan Feno, Matt Serratore, and Ben Kucera scored for Air Force, which took the lead on Feno’s goal at 2:32 of the first period and never trailed in the game. The Falcons finished with a 31-25 edge in shots on goal.
“Coming into the weekend to battle for fourth place, coming up flat in our effort is extremely disappointing,” Canisius coach Dave Smith said. “But in the end it was a valiant effort. We just came up short.”
Canisius fell to 8-9-4 in Atlantic Hockey play, 8-15-4 overall. Air Force improved to 11-5-3 in the conference, 13-9-3 overall.
The teams will play once again at HarborCenter on Saturday at 7:35 p.m.
