Richard A. Stewart Sr., of Amherst, a national account manager for a pharmaceutical company, died unexpectedly Sunday in Houston, where he had been undergoing treatment for mantle cell lymphoma. He was 60.
Born in Lackawanna, he was a graduate of Lackawanna High School and earned a degree in industrial sociology at the University at Buffalo.
Mr. Stewart worked for five years as a state corrections officer beginning in the early 1980s and was assigned to Attica, Sing Sing, Wende and Gowanda correctional facilities.
He then began a career in pharmaceutical sales, working for Bausch & Lomb, AstraZeneca and Pfizer. About 10 years ago, he joined Janssen Pharmaceutical Cos. of Johnson & Johnson, where he oversaw national accounts and teams of sales representatives.
He earned numerous sales awards and Presidents Circle citations.
Mr. Stewart was an outdoor enthusiast and enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and shooting sports. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Niagara County Sportsmen’s Association.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, the former Karen Dyll; two sons, Richard Jr. and Stephen; a daughter, Amanda; his mother, Helen; and two brothers, Gary and Corey.
Services will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday in Amigone Funeral Home, 5200 Sheridan Drive, at Hopkins Road, Amherst.
