Greatbatch wins $37.5 million in patent infringement suit

Greatbatch Inc. has won a $37.5 million judgement in a patent infringement lawsuit the battery and medical device manufacturer had filed against a competitor that it said was using its patented technology to make filtered feed-through assemblies that are used in implantable pacemakers and cardioverter defibrillators.

Greatbatch had sued AVX Filters Corp., a manufacturer of passive electronic components and other products based in Greenville, S.C., in 2013, alleging that it had used technology covered by two of its patents in the filtered feed-through assemblies it made for use in medical devices.

Thomas J. Hook, Greatbatch’s president and CEO, said the jury award was “an important milestone” in the company’s efforts to defend its patented technology.

AVX said it was reviewing the verdict and “consulting with its legal advisors on what action AVX may take in response.”
