Wheatfield to consider reduced parking for new Aldi store

WHEATFIELD – Wheatfield Supervisor Robert B. Cliffe said Tuesday that the Town Board may vote Feb. 8 on whether to allow the developers of a new Aldi food store to install fewer parking spaces than the town’s zoning code requires.

On Jan. 6, the developers dropped plans to build a second commercial building on the site of the former Adventure Speedway, 3939 Niagara Falls Boulevard, a go-kart track which is to be replaced by the 17,825-square-foot food store.

Town Engineer Timothy J. Zuber said at Monday’s Town Board meeting that the Planning Board is recommending that because of the deletion of the extra building, the town should grant Aldi a parking waiver, requiring it to install only 98 parking spaces instead of the 179 it would have to build if the town’s code were followed. The code contains a formula pegging the number of parking spaces to the square footage of buildings on the property.
