Buffalo man pleads guilty to role in jet-ski theft

LOCKPORT – A Buffalo man who took part in the attempted theft of two jet skis from a North Tonawanda business accepted a misdemeanor plea offer Monday.

Robert L. Smith, 50, of Gold Street, is to be sentenced for fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property May 4 by Niagara County Judge Sara Sheldon. In November, Jessica K. Brown, 32, of East Northrup Place, Buffalo, pleaded guilty to a felony, third-degree grand larceny, and was admitted by Sheldon to the judicial diversion program of court-supervised drug treatment.

A third defendant, Michael A. West, 35, of Dewey Street, Buffalo, is under indictment but has yet to appear in court because he’s in jail in Pennsylvania on a larceny charge.

The theft from Bow and Stern Marine on River Road in North Tonawanda occurred about 1 a.m. June 15, as the two personal water craft were hauled away on a trailer being towed by a rented truck. A passing motorist thought the activity was suspicious and called police.
