Bona women look to start another streak

After tasting defeat for the first time in 63 days, St. Bonaventure’s women’s basketball team gets back to business Wednesday night against Saint Joseph’s in the Reilly Center (Radio 105.9 FM, 7 p.m.).

Bona (17-3, 6-10 Atlantic 10) had won 16 games in a row, second longest streak in its women’s basketball history, before last Saturday’s 74-62 loss to Duquesne in Pittsburgh. During the streak, the Bonnies won 14 of the 16 games by double-digits.

Coach Jim Crowley’s team enters Wednesday’s game tied with Saint Louis for second in the conference behind George Washington (7-0). Saint Joseph’s (9-10, 3-4) lost to GW in their A-10 opener and have lost their last three. Bona has won six of the last 10 games against Saint Joseph’s but the Hawks triumphed, 66-48, in Philadelphia last season. Senior forward Katie Healy (Lancaster) of the Bonnies ranks fifth in the A-10 in scoring (15.4) and is 12th in rebounding (7.1).

Two Hawks, senior guard Ciara Andrews (11.2 ppg) and senior forward Sarah Fairbanks (10.5 ppg) are averaging in double-figures and are the only two on the roster to start all 19 games this season for veteran coach Cindy Griffin.
