A shipment of counterfeit “hoverboards” was recently confiscated by federal authorities as they were being brought over the Peace Bridge into the United States.
A tractor-trailer carrying 180 self-balancing scooters with a retail value of $52,000 was stopped in late December and found to have counterfeit batteries, according to Customs and Border Protection officials. The boxes were labeled as “Scooty”boards.
They were seized for property rights violations, authorities said.
Safety concerns about the product arose late last year as some boards caught fire, which experts linked to substandard batteries.
The agency has recently seized similar shipments across the country, including in Miami, International Falls, Minn., and Norfolk, Va.
