50 years ago: When the American falls last went dry

The American falls were slowed to a trickle on June 12, 1969, to study the effects of erosion and buildup of rock at the base of the falls. No work was done as the result of the study — the International Joint Commission recommended that nature should take its course — but the sight of the dewatered falls was a spectacle that drew people from all over the world.
