5 January highlights at Pausa Art House

Critical Mass

8 p.m. Jan. 21; $5

Pausa is known for offering young talent a chance to shine, and Critical Mass is packed with regional “young lions” of jazz, among them saxophonist Kenny Kuriscak, guitarist Jared Tinkham, keyboardist Harry Graser, bassist Anthony Henry and drummer and Alec Dube.

An Evening of Afro-Cuban Music

7 and 9 p.m. Jan. 22; $15 reserved seating for 7 p.m., $10 at door for 9 p.m. show

The latest concert in the sporadic Visiting Artist Series at Pausa will feature a trio led by Cuban pianist Michel Ferre – whose résumé, in addition to abundant jazz credits, includes work with Lauryn Hill, Usher and Mary J. Blige – joined by Cuban percussionist Vladimir Espinosa and American bassist Jeff Hoffman.

John Lombardo, Mary Ramsey and Joe Rozler

8 p.m. Jan. 23; $7

The erstwhile 10,000 Maniacs guitarist Lombardo and violist/vocalist Ramsey will be joined by virtuosic multi-instrumentalist Rozler. Each time the trio has played Pausa in the past, the venue has sold out.

Bobby Militello Quartet

8 p.m. Jan. 28; $10

This is Buffalo jazz royalty in all its splendor. Revered alto sax man Militello (Dave Brubeck, Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen) will be joined by drummer John Bacon Jr., pianist Bobby Jones and bassist Jim Coleman.

Star People: The Miles Davis Project

8 p.m. Jan. 29; $10

This project was conceived as a Pausa exclusive, and has remained one since forming in 2014. Star People is a heady ensemble of jazz cats dedicated to exploring the outer reaches of the Miles Davis catalog.
