Western New York transplants in North Carolina are rejoicing: Wegmans is coming.
Jo Natale, a spokeswoman for the Rochseter-based grocer, has confirmed it is “hoping” to open a store in Cary, North Carolina. Cary is just west of Raleigh, where many Western New Yorkers have relocated through the years.
“We have signed a letter of intent and are working through lease negotiations with Columbia Development Group,” Natale said in a statement.
Wegmans hopes to reach a final lease agreement sometime during the first quarter of 2016, she said.
Fans took to Twitter to react to the news.
“Can’t like this enough. I go on vacations to Wegmans!” tweeted @MKopack.
User @Adam_DTank joked the new store would be a “containment area for relocating yankees.”
“Commence losing your minds, Buffalo people,” wrote @corylav.
It would be the first Wegmans location in North Carolina. The company has stores in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New York.
