Report on Great Lakes diversion expected Tuesday afternoon

The International Joint Commission will release a report Tuesday afternoon that is expected to detail its findings about how successful efforts have been in protecting the waters of the Great Lakes over the last 15 years.

In 2000, the IJC published its original report, Protection of the Waters of the Great Lakes, at the suggestion of governments in the United States and Canada.

The binational advisory organization charged with protecting the shared waters between the two countries was asked to consider issues affecting the Great Lakes in that report, including water consumption, diversions from the watershed and other matters.

Today’s report is expected to be the IJC’s self-review of the relative successes and limitations of its original document and include revised recommendations the two countries can use to further protect Great Lakes waters.
