Healthy choices: Top 10 calendar picks this week include Chestnut Ridge Winterfest, other outdoor fun

Outdoor winter activities –  including Winterfest at Chestnut Ridge Park, cross-country skiing and even soccer for kids – dominate the WNY Refresh Calendar top 10 health, fitness, nutrition and family picks of the week.


Bring your own skis tour: 10:30 a.m. to noon, Tifft Nature Preserve, 1200 Fuhrmann Blvd. Guided cross-country ski tour of 5 miles of trail for adults. $5; Buffalo Museum of Science members save 10 percent. Preregistration is required at or 825-6397.

Winter Blast: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Martin Luther King Park, along Humboldt Parkway. Hasek’s Heroes and Buffalo Sabres alumni will run a hockey clinic for kids. Hot cocoa, fresh fruit and face painting also will be part of the fun in this BlueCross BlueShield of WNY Healthy Zone.

Cabin Fever Frolic:  2 to 3:30 p.m, Tifft Nature Preserve, 1200 Fuhrmann Blvd. Guided frolic on the trails for kids. $5; Buffalo Museum of Science members save 10 percent; snowshoe rentals $2. Preregistration is required at or 825-6397.


Healthy eating talk: 7 p.m., Amherst Main Library at Audubon, 350 John James Audubon Parkway, Amherst. Talk on new versus old wisdom regarding carbohydrates, fats, and protein. To register, call 689-4922. Free.


Wellness walk: 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, Tifft Nature Preserve, 1200 Fuhrmann Blvd. For all ages. Call 825-6937 to confirm walk will take place. $2 donation appreciated.


Yoga: 10 a.m. Saturday, next Saturday, Resurrection Church Community Room, 1609 Genesee St., at Doat Street. Free for all ages and abilities; a snack will be served afterward. Supported by the church and the nonprofit Yogis in Service. For more info, visit

Stories in the Woods: 10:30 a.m., Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, 93 Honorine Drive, Cheektowaga.  Enjoy hearing a nature story, followed by a guided walk in the woods. For children ages 3 to 7. Registration required; call 683-5959.

Winterfest 2016: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Chestnut Ridge Park, 6121 Chestnut Ridge Road. Free family event includes sledding, tobogganing and snowboarding, marshmallow roasting, arts and crafts, a snow sculpture contest and magic shows at 11;30 a.m. and 1 p.m.; $3 hayrides run from noon to 3 p.m.
