BNRinkside: Quinnipiac takes top spot in hockey poll

Quinnipiac did not play this weekend, yet they shot to No. 1 in the latest USCHO.com Division I men's hockey poll. That's what happens when the other top teams stumble. North Dakota, last week's No. 1, split its weekend series with Nebraska-Omaha. Of course Quinnipiac had been No. 1 on my ballot since the return from break.

Also making another appearance on my ballot is Robert Morris. The Colonials held on to the top spot in Atlantic Hockey despite a split with second-place Holy Cross over the weekend. Robert Morris hasn't dominated the league in the regular season, but they are the highest scoring team in the nation with 103 goals. Their power play ranks first in the nation, clicking at 34 percent (35 goals in 103 power plays). That combined with leading Atlantic Hockey puts them in my top 20 teams in the nation.

How the rest of my ballot shook out:

1. Quinnipiac
2. North Dakota
3. St. Cloud State
4. Providence
5. Boston College
6. Nebraska-Omaha
7. Michigan
8. Yale
9. Harvard
10. Cornell
11. Boston University
12. UMass-Lowell
13. Penn State
14. Notre Dame
15. Rensselaer
16. Denver
17. Minnesota State
18. Bowling Green
19. Michigan Tech
20. Robert Morris
