Sarah Louise McDonald, who as a nurse cared for the sick and injured at three Buffalo hospitals over a period of nearly 50 years, died Tuesday in Erie County Medical Center after a battle with cancer. She was 73.

Mrs. McDonald was born Sarah Louise Davis in Homerville, Ga. Her family relocated briefly to Detroit before moving to Buffalo in 1952.

In Buffalo, she attended Schools 12 and 37 and graduated from Fosdick-Masten Park High School in 1962 with a diploma as well as a nursing certificate.

That fall, she passed her state nursing exam and started what would be her five-decade career as a licensed practical nurse.

Mrs. McDonald worked at Deaconess Hospital from 1962 to 1964, Roswell Park Cancer Institute from 1964 to 1968 and Sisters Hospital from 1969 to 2012, at which time she retired.

A member of St. John Baptist Church since 1959, she was involved in many auxiliaries and positions of leadership.

She especially enjoyed her work as head of the senior/junior youth fellowship and instructor of Sunday school class.

Her husband of 36 years, Edward McDonald, died in 2014.

She is survived by two daughters, Aiesha Randle and Malika; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday in St. John Baptist Church, 184 Goodell St.
