Joseph T. Onesi, retired carpenter and World War II veteran

PENDLETON – Joseph T. Onesi, a carpenter and an Army veteran of World War II, died Thursday in Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Buffalo, after a brief illness. He was 97.

Born in Starford, Pa., Mr. Onesi was based in Italy during the war.

Formerly of Niagara Falls, Mr. Onesi was a carpenter and worked with Carpenters Local 280 until his retirement in the mid-1970s.

Shortly after his retirement, he and his wife moved to Jacksonville, Fla.

In 2009, Mr. Onesi was honored as a Pioneer of Pine Avenue by the Pine Avenue Business Association.

He also was a member of the Italian American Veterans Association and a former member of Prince of Peace Church.

Mr. Onesi’s wife of 62 years, the former Catherine Lacerenza, died in 2002.

Survivors include two daughters, Joyce Harris and Rosemary Bloom; a son, Paul; two sisters; Kathryn Rotundo and Mary Decorse; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered Sunday in Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph Parish at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Niagara Falls.
