A family lost their home and their two dogs in a fire at 1:38 p.m. Saturday in a lower apartment at 44 Duerstein St.

The fire reportedly started in a mattress in the first floor bedroom. The fire heavily damaged the first floor apartment in the 2-1/2 story wood-frame house. The family’s cocker spaniel and another dog of unknown breed both perished in the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation

The damage to the building was listed at $20,000 and another $10,000 in damage to the contents of the house. The Red Cross was called to assist the family of four, two adults and their two children who lived in the first floor apartment.

Residents of the second floor were not home at the time of the fire. Damage to the second-floor apartment was mostly smoke damage, according to fire investigators.
