KNIGHT, Elmo "Hum"

KNIGHT - Elmo "Hum" August 17, 1923 - January 10, 2016.

Elmo "Hum" Knight, 92, of Sarasota, FL and formerly of Tonawanda, NY died on January 10, 2016 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Elmo was born and raised in East Aurora, NY. He graduated from East Aurora High School in 1941 and enrolled at Syracuse University. In March 1944 he left Syracuse to join the US Army where he served in The First Infantry Division. He earned a purple heart as a result of severe wounds received in October 1944 during the first days of the battle of the Hurtgen Forest. Due to these injuries, he finished out his service with the Army Air Corps in England. After his discharge at the end of WWII, Elmo returned to Syracuse university where he earned a PHD in audiology and speech pathology. Elmo was recruited to serve as the Executive Director of the Buffalo Hearing and Speech Center from its inception in 1952. Through much of his career he simultaneously served as Executive Director of the Children's Hospital, Department of Speech and Language Services; Chief of Audiology at Buffalo General Hospital, and Executive Director of the Speech and Hearing Clinic, Department of Otolaryngology at Sister's of Charity Hospital. His long career also included appointments as a Clinical Associate Professor At SUNY Buffalo, School of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery; and also as an Adjunct Professor at Buffalo State University. Dr. Knight is recognized at the local, state, and national levels as a pioneer and one of the leading audiologist and speech pathologists of his time. His dedication to enabling deaf children to reach their full potential by giving them the gift of speech is extolled by legions of his patients who still contact him to express their gratitude. Elmo was gifted creatively and enjoyed art, poetry, writing, and woodcraft. Along with his career and family, these brought him great joy in life. Elmo was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Dassey Knight, sisters Beatrice Knight and Gloria Knight Frank, brother Reginald Knight, and granddaughter Jocelyn Knight. He is survived by his brother F. Robert of Sarasota, FL, son John of Scarborough, ME, daughter Linda Knight of Kenwood, CA, grandson Douglas Knight, of Scarborough, ME, and granddaughter Dr. M. Noelle Knight Madera of Philadelphia, PA. A memorial will be held from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Saturday January 23, 2016 at TOALE BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, Gulfgate Chapel 3603 S. Tamiami Trail, in Sarasota, FL. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Elmo's name to children's charities of your choosing.
