Elisabeth A. Meyer, former nursery school director

Nov. 19, 1932 - Jan. 13, 2016

Elisabeth “Betty” Meyer, past director of the Orchard Park Co-op Nursery School, died Wednesday in Mercy Hospital. She was 83.

Mrs. Meyer, a native of Rochester, began teaching after she graduated from the New Paltz State College. She married her husband, Walter, in 1958 after meeting him on a blind date.

Her love of teaching began as a young Girl Scout. She went on to lead a troop and eventually take a job at the co-op nursery school, where she sent her own children. Her 30-year career included mentoring parents and developing new and more modern programming.

Mrs. Meyer enjoyed spending time with her family at their camp property on the Finger Lakes and hiking at the nearby Grimes Glen.

Early in their marriage, she and her husband joined the Niagara Bicycle Club and took cycling trips together. Later in life she took up gardening. She was a member of the Orchard Park Garden Club and enjoyed its Christmas gathering last month.

Mrs. Meyer was a longtime member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Kathryn; two sons, Paul and David; a sister, Virginia; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 6595 East Quaker St., Orchard Park.
