BARR, Jack

BARR - Jack Age 81, resident of Buffalo, NY for over fifty years, passed away Monday, November 30, 2015, at Bickford Senior Living of Davenport. Burial took place on Friday, December 11, 2015. A service to honor and celebrate Jack's life will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, January 15, 2016 at Weerts Funeral Home. Jack Barr was born and raised in Davenport, IA, a son of Israel Edward and Viola O. (Neilson) Barr. Jack was younger brother to Edward W. Barr and twin brother to Joanne (Barr) Maxwell. Jack and Joanne were inseparable in their elementary and junior high years. He attended and graduated high school at Davenport High School and received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Iowa. He went on to receive his Masters Degree at the University of California, Berkeley, CA. Jack's lifelong career was as a Professor of Mathematics at Buffalo State College, Buffalo, NY. With Jack having lived so far from family, he was blessed to have many friends who were as close as family while he lived in Buffalo. Jack enjoyed traveling and did so whenever possible. Jack's love and passion for music came from his mother. Jack's home was filled with beautiful music and instruments including two pipe organs, a grand piano, a harp, harpsichords, and any percussion that one could dream of. He acquired his most prized pipe organ when he placed and won a bid on a Reiger organ from the Metropolitan of New York, New York City. He also appreciated jazz music and met and became lifelong friends with jazz singer Anita O'Day. Jack always stayed in shape (even though he had a tremendous appreciation and love for chocolate). In fact, he was so handsome, he started modeling when in his fifties and he appeared in magazines, advertisements, catalogs, and on a city bus. His family was appreciative of Jack's visits to Iowa and his welcoming us into his home in Buffalo. His nephews and nieces always thought their Uncle Jack was "cool" and when they were kids, they enjoyed receiving their yearly Christmas cards with money in them! We appreciated that Jack was close to family these past precious months. Jack is survived by his brother and wife, Edward and Delores "Sis" Barr, Davenport; twin sister, Joanne (Barr) Maxwell, Davenport; and nieces and nephews and their spouses, including Brenda Barr, Bettendorf; Patricia Fuller, Rock Island; Joseph Maxwell, Davenport; Timothy and Cindy Maxwell, Albuquerque, NM; Elizabeth "Beth" and Mike Martinez, Davenport; and Scott and Luci Maxwell, Parkview. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Israel and Viola Barr; stepmother, Estelle Barr; brother-in-law, Jim Maxwell; nephew Jim Maxwell Jr.; and his beloved, faithful dog, Kelly. The Barr and Maxwell family wishes to thank Jack's caregivers at Bickford Senior Living for their loving care and concern.
