Would-be bank robber flees empty-handed

A young man entered the First Niagara Bank branch on the 2400 block of Main Street near Jewett Avenue Monday morning and pointed a gun at a guard before fleeing empty handed, police said.

The crook, dressed in a dark hoodie and blue baseball cap, ran out of the bank and into a cab, police said. At some point during the thief’s escape, police added, he apparently robbed the cab driver. An investigation is continuing.

A customer inside the bank during the attempted hold-up said he heard a commotion and then the suspect took off running.

“It was very quick, very quick,” the witness said, describing the cab as a van parked by a fire hydrant on Jewett.
