The 4-year-old Orchard Park girl accidentally shot late Sunday afternoon was expected to return home from a local hospital some time Monday, authorities said.
The girl was shot once in the torso at about 4:45 p.m. Sunday on Sandpiper Court, Orchard Park Police Chief Mark F. Pacholec confirmed early Monday afternoon.
Emergency personnel treated the girl on the scene and took her quickly to Women & Children’s Hospital, where she remained overnight.
“I did talk to one of her parents, and she is doing better,” Pacholec said of the girl. “She should be coming home (Monday).”
The chief said the shooting clearly was accidental, not intentional, blaming it on improper handling of a weapon.
Pacholec would not say who was handling the weapon, what kind of gun it was or any other circumstances surrounding the incident.
But Orchard Park police are investigating the case and working with the Erie County District Attorney’s Office, and charges could be filed in the case.
“It’s possible that there could be a reckless-endangerment charge,” Pacholec said.
The site of the shooting, Sandpiper Court, is a cul-de-sac of single-family homes off Jewett Holmwood Road.
