NORTH TONAWANDA – The cleanup of contamination at 600 River Road has been completed, according to an announcement from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The work was done under DEC guidance by Rock One Development of Clarence, which plans a 110-unit apartment and townhouse complex on the 5.95-acre site. The property, located between a medical office and a marina, is dominated by a 2,940-square-foot metal warehouse.
The site was formerly the location of the Tonawanda Iron Works, which operated from 1886 to 1972, and AJ Marine Construction, a retailer, which operated from 1988 to 2008.
The property included heavy metals and hydrocarbons in the soil. Rock One laid down two feet of clean soil as fill, and agreed to an environmental easement and a site management plan for future monitoring of contamination, which includes annual certification that the controls and soil cover remain in place and are effective.
