The Niagara men’s hockey team certainly outshot Mercyhurst on Friday night here. The Purple Eagles just didn’t outscore them.
Despite a 35-18 edge in shots on goal Niagara was on the short end of a 3-2 decision at Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pa.
“This loss is a really tough one to handle,” Purple Eagles coach Dave Burkholder said. “We dominated the shot totals and tilted the ice in our favor most of the night. We give up just 18 shots and lose. We hope our guys stay with the process, because that was a pretty good effort.”
Keegan Harper and Stephen Pietrobon did solve Adam Carlson for goals, but otherwise the Lakers’ goalie turned in a dominating performance. Jonathan Charbonneau had the game-winning goal for Mercyhurst in the third period. Niagara fell to 3-14-2 overall, and 3-9-1 in Atlantic Hockey.
The teams play again on Saturday night, shifting to Dwyer Arena. The contest begins at 7:30 p.m. (Radio 1340 AM).
